New SAT/ACT reading quizzes!

While going through all of my quizzes to make some edits/updates, I noticed that while there were an awful lot of grammar exercises, I was sorely lacking in the reading quizzes department and that was really a major oversight (oops!) since for a lot of students, thats the hardest part of the test. So Ive decided to remedy the issue. I now have one quiz with mixed question types (literal comprehension, inference, function) as well as one devoted to vocabulary in context. Ill do my best to add one or two more before I get sucked back into the vortex of SAT book revisions. (And in case youre wondering, no, I still dont have exact release dates for the new editions; Ill post them when I do. I promise.) Im also in the process of adding PDF versions of my grammar exercises, in case anyone would prefer to do them on paper or use them in a class. Poverty has long been a consistent characteristic in crime. Numerous theories like Social Disorganization, Labeling Theory, and Strain Theory have been created to try to explain the connection between poverty and crime. As these theories demonstrate , the devastating external factors that poverty causes contribute to crime. Yet, the connection between poverty and crime continues to deliver new data, adding to the way criminologist analyze crime. These studies develop new methods including governmental programs , investments in certain areas or change in tax codes for tackling poverty emerge. Therefore, it is pivotal to continue studying the connection between poverty and crime to properly a large of factor of crime from its roots. The article â€Å"Exploring the Factors Associated With Youth Homelessness and Arrest,† by Kim Fielding and Cheryl Forchuk discusses the homeless epidemic found throughout Canada. It is estimated that around 150,000 Canadians are homeless, with around one-third of those being juveniles. The article focuses on juveniles because of their fragile age and their lack of stable environment makes them prone to commit crimes in order to obtain basic necessities. The study includes interviews, surveys, and demographics to characterize the homeless participants in order to provide an understanding of their homeless situation. â€Å"The Slave Ship: A Human History† written by Marcus Rediker describes the horrifying experiences of Africans, and captains, and ship crewmen on their journey through the Middle Passage, the water way in the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and the Americas. The use of slaves to cultivate crops in the Caribbean and America offered a great economy for the European countries by providing â€Å"free† labor and provided immense wealth for the Europeans. Rediker describes the slave migration by saying, â€Å"There exists no account of the mechanism for history’s greatest forced migration, which was in many ways the key to an entire phase of globalization† (10). Africans who arrived at their destination an d appeared healthy after being cleaned and oiled were sold and would most likely spend the rest of their life cultivating crops such as cotton or sugar cane. To really show the horrendous conditions that the slaves endured, the author includes a 1787 replication drawing of the slave ship Brooks. Built in 1781 with a lower deck intended to accommodate 294 slaves, giving each slave a space comparable to the size of a coffin. Adult males were allocated a space six feet long and fifteen inches wide and allowing even less space for adult women, boys, and girls. The height of the same area was just five feet, and did not include any toilet facilities for the slaves. In most cases, the captains would load double the number of slaves their ships were designed for leading to even worse conditions onboard with more mouths to feed but not enough provisions to compensate.
